The Distinction Between Dry Sandpaper And Waterproof Sandpaper

Aug 21, 2022

Sandpaper is an indispensable thing. Sandpaper is widely used. Various mold models such as mobile phones, cars, and wood products are indispensable. Secondly, sandpaper also plays an important role in the coating construction process.

The difference between dry sandpaper and waterproof sandpaper

What is the essential difference between waterproof sandpaper and dry sandpaper? Is it really like a literal meaning? Grinding materials That is why dry sandpaper does not use water, but waterproof sandpaper does?

The gap between the sand grains of the water scrub paper is small, and the ground powder is also small. When used with water, the powder will flow out with the water, so it is best to use it with water. If the waterproof sandpaper is used for dry grinding, the powder will remain in the gaps of the sand grains, and the surface of the sandpaper will become shiny and the original effect will not be achieved. The dry sandpaper is very convenient. The gap between the sand grains is large, and the grinding powder is also large. It will fall off due to the large gap during the grinding process, so it does not need to be used together with water. Dry sand can be divided into red sand and white sand, the difference is that the former is not treated with anti-blocking coating.

The waterproof sandpaper grinds slower, but it is smoother (the finer the waterproof sandpaper, the slower it will be polished, and it is often used for oil grinding of high-gloss products); The faster the coarse dry sandpaper is ground, the coarser it will be. Conventionally, 400 grains or less are often used for white body wood grinding, and 400-800 grains are often used for oil grinding parts).

Waterproof abrasive paper is generally sanded under water conditions, so there is less dust and better working conditions. Although dry sandpaper has the characteristics of anti-blocking, anti-static, good flexibility and high wear resistance, the dust pollution is relatively heavy, and appropriate protective equipment needs to be worn during operation (but the powerful function of dry sandpaper is also bearable).

Common mistakes in the use of sandpaper:

1. Grinding old sandpaper is equivalent to one size higher sandpaper

Old sandpaper means reduced cutting power and increased heat generation. If you feel that the sanding speed is too slow, change to a new sandpaper, maybe one size lower.

2. The harder you press on the sandpaper, the faster you sand

Pressure just adds wear and heat to the sandpaper, and even burns the wood. Generally speaking, sanding only requires very light pressure, let the sandpaper and things work hard, so that it is easy and extends the life of the sandpaper, and the speed is not slow at all.

3. A marked sandpaper is used in the end

Many beginners only buy one size sandpaper, which is very low power.

4. Grinding is a long and boring process

If you feel this way, it's usually because the polishing process doesn't see noticeable progress. This means that the sandpaper you are using is too high or too old and needs to be replaced.
