The difference between grinding discs and cutting wheels

Both angle grinding discs and cutting wheels can be used on a polishing machine, but their performance requirements differ in different applications.

The thickness differs

Let's take a 100mm diameter grinding disc and a cutting wheel as examples. Grinding discs are thicker, typically over 10mm thick, while cutting discs are thinner, usually around 1mm thick. The thinner cutting wheel results in less frictional resistance during cutting, making it suitable for cutting operations. However, if used to grind a workpiece, the cut off wheel will break due to pressure on its sides. The thicker grinding disc can withstand greater longitudinal force, making it suitable for grinding workpieces, but it cannot be used for cutting.

Different uses

Grinding discs are used for grinding and polishing, such as removing burrs or weld beads from the surface of steel parts. Grinding discs are needed to remove burrs and smooth weld beads. Cutting wheels are used for cutting materials, such as cutting a 2-meter-long round steel bar into several sections. This requires a fast and sharp cutting disc.

Use the cutting wheel correctly

Choosing the right cutting wheel:

Select the appropriate cut off wheel based on the material to be cut and the working environment. Different materials require different types of cutting wheels, such as metal, ceramic tile, and concrete.

Wear safety equipment:

When using a cutting wheel, always wear safety glasses, gloves, and earplugs to prevent injury from flying material fragments and noise.

Familiarize yourself with the operating procedures:

Before using the cutting wheel, ensure you are familiar with the operating procedures and the equipment's instruction manual. Following the correct operating procedures will ensure safe and efficient work completion.

Concentration:

When using a cutting wheel, it is essential to maintain focus and avoid distractions or fatigue. Only with concentrated attention can you accurately complete the cutting task.

Regular inspection and maintenance:

Regularly check the wear condition of the cutting wheels and replace severely worn discs promptly. At the same time, keep the cutting equipment clean and well-maintained to ensure its proper operation.

When is it appropriate to replace the cutting wheel?

The lifespan of a cutting wheel depends on various factors, such as the quality of the raw materials, the frequency of use, and the cutting technique employed.

Generally, a cut off wheel should be replaced promptly when the following conditions are observed:

Determine when to replace the cutting wheel based on its outer diameter.

For example, when using a 4.5-inch cut off wheel to cut a 12mm stainless steel pipe, the grinding wheel should have 60mm to 65mm remaining after cutting. It's crucial not to wear it down to the very end in an attempt to save money.

Pay attention to the expiration date of the cutting wheel.

The product's shelf life is typically 3 years. We will also print the expiration month and year on the cut off wheel's hole ring to help you determine whether it can continue to be used.

Observe the condition of the cutting wheel to determine when to replace it.

(1) When the cutting disc develops cracks or breaks, it needs to be replaced with a brand new one.

(2) When the cutting efficiency or precision of the cutting disc decreases, or when there are signs of tilting, gaps, or damage to the cut surface, it indicates that the quality of the cutting disc has deteriorated and it needs to be replaced promptly.

It is important to note that the frequency of cutting wheel replacement varies from person to person and needs to be determined based on specific circumstances. When using resin cut off wheels, pay attention to safety, follow relevant operating procedures, and wear gloves, goggles, and other protective equipment to avoid accidental injury.

Everything You Need to Know

What materials are cutting wheels suitable for?

Cutting wheels are commonly used for cutting carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and certain non-ferrous metals. Selecting the correct wheel specification ensures cleaner cuts and longer service life.

Can cutting wheels be used on both angle grinders and stationary machines?

Yes. Cutting wheels are designed for use on angle grinders, chop saws, and stationary cutting machines, provided that the wheel size and maximum operating speed match the machine specifications.

How do I choose the right cutting wheel for my application?

Wheel selection depends on material type, thickness, machine speed, and cutting method. Thinner wheels offer faster cutting and less burr, while thicker wheels provide higher stability for heavy-duty applications.

What safety precautions should be followed when using a cutting wheel?

Always check the wheel for damage before use, operate within the recommended speed, wear appropriate protective equipment, and ensure the wheel is correctly mounted to prevent breakage and ensure safe operation.
