Description
Zinc Stearate abrasive paper for grinding of soft materials such as wood, paint, and soft metals.
Zinc Stearate abrasive paper is chemical zinc stearated coated basis of abrasives paper, abrasive papers are usually open coated to ensure the wood rosin or paint sticking to the abrasives then effect the using and paper life even the stearate will tear off during polishing.
The zinc stearate used to coat sandpaper does prevent the wood rosin from sticking to the abrasive and the coating that holds the abrasive.
The stearate coats both the abrasive and (mainly) the binding agent that holds the abrasive to the paper or cloth backing material. This prevents the rosin and wood particles from sticking to these. I am not sure but would believe the stearate would wear off somewhat quickly from the abrasive, but enough remains on the backing to retard sticking. Almost (if not all) abrasives used for sanding wood are "open coat" which means there is openings between the abrasive grains for wood derbies to enter - allowing the abrasives to keep cutting. The zinc stearate prevents this derbies from sticking to the material - allowing it to fall away when you lift the sand paper from the surface.
