What Factors Need To Be Considered When Designing The Formula Of Vitrified Grinding Wheels?

Sep 12, 2024

1. Before firing, the vitrified grinding wheel must have a certain wet and dry strength to facilitate unloading, removal, transportation of blanks and kiln loading. Therefore, the formula should be determined according to the characteristics of the equipment, the degree of mechanization of the production process, and even the flatness of the workshop road surface.

2. For vitrified grinding wheels that need to be processed as semi-finished products before the kiln, the dry blank strength should be considered higher.

3. To facilitate mixing and screening operations. For this reason, the amount, density or concentration of wetting agent and temporary binder for fine-grained abrasives, harder abrasives and silicon carbide abrasives with a larger amount of binder in the formula is generally different from that of coarse and medium-grained vitrified grinding wheels.

4. From the perspective of formulation, we should try to avoid possible waste products (such as cracks caused by excessive shrinkage, foaming, deformation, etc.). We should pay special attention to the particle size and hardness that are prone to waste products (such as fine particle size, high hardness, etc.).

5. The strength of the vitrified grinding wheel should be ensured from the perspective of formulation. Especially for vitrified grinding wheels that are easy to break (such as coarse-grained soft grinding wheels, etc.). The principles are as follows:

a. The new product should have the same hardness as the old one;

b. The particle size of the abrasive should be the same;

c. The bulk density of the abrasive is the same or lower;

d. The abrasive strength should be the same or the new abrasive strength should be higher;

e. The new formulation should have the same or higher tensile strength;

f. The new formulation has the same or lower density;

g. The new formulations have the same or lower elastic modulus.

The above principles can be roughly summarized as follows: use abrasives with higher strength; use a binder with high strength and low elastic modulus to reduce the amount of binder and increase the porosity; use abrasives with low bulk density or lower abrasive tool density to make the structure of the vitrified grinding wheel looser.
