Mostly rubber balloons are available with different pattern designs. Jeans or garments are mounted on designed balloons and filled with air to get impressions of whiskers. Garment is scrubbed over pattern carefully with emery paper on pattern lines. This operation requires high skilled labor and who can handle uniformity and sequence in whisker line. Fabric may be damaged during rubbing if careless. This method is famous for high quality garments.

The finishing is made of a row of horizontal rollers, which can be coated with sandpaper or with chemical treated abrasive. Denim is set on the drum to grind the protruding part. This finishing method will make the denim part fade, and produce a sense of plush on the denim surface, giving it a soft and delicate hand feel. Sand washing can also make jeans wrinkle, cat hair and other fashionable appearance effects.

In order to reach the desired appearance and performance, dry treatments can be combined with the wet processes. 

Sandblasting is the most popular dry treatment on jeans in old days. High speed air is blown on the garment together with sand powder such as brown aluminum oxide or white aluminum oxide, since it is harmful to the health of the operator, emergent paper for garments is an alternative technology.

Hand rubbing/scraping: emery paper for garments are the perfect tools to achieve target appearance. Grit available from P40 to P6000.  The most effective grit are 220, 320, 360, 400 and 500, the garments should look as naturally aged.
