Honing stone is a kind of rock rich in oil. It is also a strip-shaped bonded abrasive made of abrasives and binders.
From the perspective of material classification, there are six main types of honing stone: green silicon carbide, white aluminum oxide, brown aluminum oxide, boron carbide, ruby and natural jade.
The origin of honing stone is similar to that of coal, kerosene and asphalt. It is a bed of organic matter accumulated by ancient animals and plants, accumulated in shallow waters on the coast, rich in low-grade organic plants, etc. The honing stone has a fine structure, contains lime and sand inside, and is tough enough to sharpen tools and metal surfaces.
Honing stone is widely used in industry. For example, honing stone sintered corundum is a microcrystalline corundum product sintered at high temperature, with a compact and delicate structure, high hardness and strength. The product is rose red, with small grinding wheel type, standard type, grinding head type, etc. It is suitable for forming grinding processing of instrument industry, precision parts, etc., and the precision surface roughness can reach about 0.05μm.
There are many types of sharpening stones. For example, diamond sharpening stone has good elasticity, cutting force and wear resistance. Ordinary sharpening stones are used in machinery manufacturing and other fields. The efficiency of super fine grinding sharpening stone is twice that of ordinary sharpening stone. Ruby oilstone is made of alumina powder sintered at high temperature, with a compact structure and high strength. Although the hardness of boron carbide oilstone is lower than that of industrial diamond, it is higher than that of silicon carbide. The particle size is between 400 and 1000. The smaller the particle size, the coarser it is, and the grinding amount is large. It is used for semi-finished tool grinding. It has strong hardness, wear resistance and is not easy to scratch.
When using sharpening stone, the particle size of diamond grinding paste ranges from W40 to W0.5. W40 is the coarsest with a large grinding amount, and W0.5 is the finest, which is used for polishing without annealing. Even the hardest knife can be ground. Applying coarse W40 grinding paste on boron carbide sharpening stone can speed up the grinding amount without annealing. Then clean the coarse grinding paste on the knife, and then apply W0.5 grinding paste on ruby or natural jade, and the polishing effect is like a mirror. Green silicon carbide, white aluminum oxide, and brown aluminum oxide are not hard enough and have coarse grains, which can easily scratch the knife and will not anneal during polishing and grinding. The grain size of the oil stone greater than 1000 mainly depends on the grinding paste used. For example, if W1.5 grinding paste is applied to a 1000-mesh ruby, the grinding effect is the same as that of W1.5 grinding paste, that is, the effect of a 2500-grain oil stone.
