Metallographic Sandpaper

Metallographic sandpaper is a specialized abrasive product designed for precise sample preparation in metallographic analysis. It provides fast stock removal, minimal deformation, and consistent surface finishing, making it ideal for laboratories, research institutions, and industrial quality control. With premium silicon carbide abrasives and a water-resistant backing, it ensures reliable performance in wet grinding applications.

Description

metallographic sandpaper-4

Metallographic sandpaper is engineered for grinding and polishing metal samples before microscopic examination. It is typically manufactured using silicon carbide, white aluminum oxide, or mixed abrasives, with silicon carbide being the most widely used due to its sharp cutting performance.

The product features uniform grit size distribution, which is essential for achieving consistent and repeatable results. Designed primarily for wet grinding, it helps reduce heat generation and prevents microstructural damage, ensuring the integrity of the sample surface.

Product Advantages
01.

Uniform Abrasive Distribution for Precision Results

Manufactured using electrostatic coating technology, the abrasive grains are evenly distributed and properly oriented, ensuring sharp cutting action and a consistent surface finish.

02.

Fast Stock Removal with Minimal Deformation

The sandpaper enables rapid material removal while maintaining a shallow deformation layer, which is critical for accurate metallographic analysis, especially for hard materials.

03.

Excellent Water Resistance & Long Service Life

The high-quality latex paper backing offers superior water resistance compared to traditional kraft paper, allowing repeated use and extending the product lifespan.

04.

Easy Installation

with Adhesive Backing

The PSA (pressure-sensitive adhesive) backing prevents edge curling during wet grinding and allows quick and convenient replacement, improving operational efficiency.

Differences from Wet Sandpaper and Dry Sandpaper

To better understand the value of metallographic sandpaper, it is important to compare it with wet sandpaper and dry sandpaper, which are commonly used in general applications:

Feature Metallographic Sandpaper Wet Sandpaper Dry Sandpaper
Primary Purpose Precision metallographic sample preparation General wet sanding & polishing General dry sanding
Abrasive Uniformity Highly uniform, controlled grit distribution Moderate uniformity Less consistent
Grinding Method Optimized for controlled wet grinding Wet grinding Dry grinding
Surface Precision Very high (scratch control, flatness) Medium Lower
Deformation Control Minimal deformation layer Moderate Higher risk of thermal damage
Backing Material High-grade latex paper (waterproof, durable) Waterproof paper Kraft paper or cloth
Heat Generation Very low Low High
Application Field Laboratories, research, quality inspection Automotive, woodworking, polishing Wood, metal, paint sanding
*Metallographic sandpaper is not just a sanding tool-it is a precision instrument designed for scientific and industrial analysis, outperforming both wet and dry sandpapers in accuracy and reliability.

When to change metallographic sandpaper

metallographic sandpaper-8

The working principle of metallographic sandpaper for grinding sample surfaces is to use sharp abrasive particles fixed to a paper base to rapidly grind the sample surface, thereby removing the deformed layer on the metallographic sample surface. Simultaneously, the abrasive particles participating in the grinding process break due to the force, with the sharp edges being worn away, and the remaining parts remaining in the adhesive layer, thus blunting the surface.

The image compares new sandpaper with worn sandpaper. It is clear that the surface of the worn metallographic sandpaper is essentially smoothed out.

Furthermore, when metallographic sandpaper has been in use for an extended period, its abrasive properties diminish and its material removal rate decreases; the blunted abrasive particles can inflict fresh damage upon the sample surface.

Can you guess which of the examples on the right shows the better grinding result?

The answer is the right side. Did you guess correctly?

When a sample is ground using worn, used sandpaper, its surface appears-to the naked eye-smoother and more reflective than a surface ground with new sandpaper (as shown in the image on the left). In reality, however, the depth of the deformed layer on this sample surface is significantly greater.

On the right, the grinding marks produced by the new sandpaper are more distinct and clearly overlap-with one mark superimposed upon another-presenting an image that exhibits a distinct three-dimensional topography.

How do you determine the right time to replace metallographic sandpaper?

When grinding a sample with metallographic sandpaper, if a single grit size requires three or more repeated passes to achieve an acceptable surface finish, the used sandpaper should be replaced.

Replacing the sandpaper too early results in waste and directly increases sample preparation costs; conversely, replacing it too late compromises the grinding quality, not only prolonging the preparation time but also increasing the difficulty of subsequent polishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact customer service; we are dedicated to serving you.

Why use metallographic sandpaper instead of regular sandpaper?

+

-

Because it offers uniform grinding, minimal deformation, and superior surface consistency, which are essential for accurate metallographic analysis.

Is wet grinding necessary?

+

-

Wet grinding is highly recommended as it reduces heat, prevents clogging, and improves surface quality.

How do I choose the right grit size?

+

-

Coarse (P60–P240): Initial grinding

Medium (P320–P800): Intermediate grinding

Fine (P1000+): Final finishing
