What Are The Advantages Of Green Silicon Carbide Grinding Wheels?

Nov 04, 2024

Green silicon carbide has high hardness and strong cutting ability. Because of its stable chemical properties, it has good thermal conductivity.

From the production process point of view, the manufacturing method of green silicon carbide is the same as that of black silicon carbide, and it is also formed at a high temperature of about 2200°C in a resistance furnace. However, in terms of raw material selection, the raw material purity of green silicon carbide is higher. After smelting, it presents a green translucent hexagonal crystal, and its SiC content is higher than that of black silicon carbide. Although the physical properties of green silicon carbide are similar to those of black silicon carbide, it is more brittle than black silicon carbide.

The properties of green silicon carbide are destined to make it more suitable for grinding cemented carbide and hard and brittle metals such as copper, brass, aluminum and magnesium. It is also suitable for grinding non-metallic materials such as gemstones, optical glass, ceramics, etc.

The green silicon carbide grinding wheel is a porous body made of green silicon carbide as raw material, adding various binders to the abrasive, and then pressing, drying and roasting.

The sharpness of the abrasive grains and high hardness are the significant advantages of green silicon carbide grinding wheels. They can grind hard and brittle materials such as cemented carbide, ceramics, optical glass, and alloys. The green silicon carbide grinding wheel is also suitable for grinding workpieces that are easily deformed by heat because of its good thermal conductivity. However, the problem of high brittleness also makes the green silicon carbide grinding wheel have the disadvantage of poor edge retention, so it is not suitable for processing workpieces with greater toughness.

The application range of green silicon carbide grinding wheels is wide, and it can grind cast iron, non-ferrous metals, hard steel, soft steel, 300 (or 400) series stainless steel, forgeable cast steel, high-speed steel, (aluminum nickel cobalt) magnetic steel, chrome plate, brass and other materials.
