The Difference Between Dry Sandpaper And Waterproof Sandpaper

Sandpaper is an indispensable tool with a wide range of applications. It's essential for creating molds and models for various items, including mobile phones, cars, and tables. Sandpaper can be categorized into dry sandpaper, waterproof sandpaper, and sponge sandpaper. What they all have in common is the use of an adhesive to bond different abrasive particles and the sandpaper matrix together.

 

What are the differences between dry sandpaper and waterproof sandpaper?

 

Waterproof sandpaper, also known as water-resistant sandpaper, is sandpaper that can be used with water. The abrasive grains of waterproof sandpaper are generally made of silicon carbide, and the paper base is usually kraft paper. There are also higher-end brands, such as 3M wet sandpaper, which often uses latex paper as the paper base. Latex paper is characterized by its good flexibility and stronger adhesion of the abrasive grains, making the sandpaper more durable, with more uniform grains, and resulting in better polishing effects. The gaps between the abrasive grains of waterproof sandpaper are smaller than those of dry sandpaper, producing smaller debris. When used with water, the debris is washed away, maintaining the sharpness of the sandpaper surface. If waterproof sandpaper is used dry, the debris will adhere to the gaps between the abrasive grains, causing the sandpaper surface to lose its sharpness and grinding power, thus failing to achieve its intended effect. Waterproof sandpaper is widely used in stone polishing, hardware processing, mold making, wall putty sanding, automotive surface polishing, rust removal, and paint removal.

 

 

Dry sandpaper, also known as dry abrasive paper, has larger gaps between the abrasive grains, producing larger abrasive particles. These particles fall off on their own during use, eliminating the need for water. The abrasive grains are typically high-quality silicon carbide, and the paper base is usually latex paper, resulting in better flexibility, better heat dissipation, and less clogging. Dry sandpaper is widely used in various industries and trades, including woodworking, stone processing, precision mold polishing, and synthetic material processing, with its application being particularly widespread in woodworking and mold polishing.

 

Waterproof sandpaper is generally used for sanding under moist conditions, so there is less dust and the working conditions are better. While dry sandpaper has the characteristics of being anti-clogging, anti-static, flexible, and highly abrasion-resistant, it produces more dust pollution, and appropriate protective equipment must be worn when using it (although this is acceptable given the powerful features of dry sandpaper).
