Brown Aluminum Oxide: A Versatile Abrasive for General Grinding

Brown aluminum oxide is one of the most commonly used abrasives, containing about 93%–95% Al₂O₃. It offers good toughness, durability, and cost efficiency, making it suitable for general grinding applications.

It is mainly used for materials with high tensile strength, such as carbon steel, alloy steel, and cast iron. Its strong grains maintain cutting ability during grinding, making it widely used in grinding wheels and coated abrasives.

 

White Aluminum Oxide: Ideal for Precision Grinding

White aluminum oxide has a higher alumina content, usually above 98%, with higher hardness and better self-sharpening performance. Its grains fracture easily during grinding, continuously exposing new cutting edges.

It is suitable for precision grinding of hardened steel, high-speed steel, and other hard materials. It also helps reduce grinding heat and minimize the risk of workpiece burning.

 

Pink Aluminum Oxide: For Fine Finishing Applications

Pink aluminum oxide is made by adding chromium oxide to white aluminum oxide, improving toughness and grinding stability.

It is mainly used in precision grinding applications such as tool processing, measuring instruments, and thread grinding. When better surface finish and dimensional accuracy are required, it provides excellent results.

 

 

Black Silicon Carbide: Efficient for Soft and Brittle Materials

Black silicon carbide features high hardness and sharp cutting edges. Although its toughness is lower than aluminum oxide abrasives, its excellent cutting ability makes it suitable for low tensile strength materials.

Green silicon carbide has higher purity and sharper cutting performance than black silicon carbide. It is mainly used for precision grinding of hard and brittle materials, including carbide, optical glass, and gemstones.

 

How to Select the Right Abrasive?

 

Abrasive selection mainly depends on the workpiece material and required surface quality.

 

For carbon steel and alloy steel, brown aluminum oxide is commonly used for rough grinding, while white aluminum oxide is preferred for finishing. Hardened steel and high-speed steel are better matched with white aluminum oxide or pink aluminum oxide due to their good self-sharpening performance.

 

For cast iron, brass, and aluminum, black silicon carbide provides efficient cutting performance. For carbide, ceramics, and gemstones, green silicon carbide is the better choice.
