What Are The Differences Between Sponge Sandpaper And Waterproof Sandpaper For Metal Polishing?

Feb 24, 2026

Introduction to Metal Polishing Sponge Sandpaper:

Metal polishing sponge sandpaper consists of abrasive particles bonded to flexible materials such as paper or cloth. It is a primary tool used for grinding and polishing processes. Sponge sandpaper comes in two types: paper-based and cloth-paper-based. Paper-based sponge sandpaper is harder and can produce a high-gloss finish; it is used for fine and ultra-fine grinding. Cloth-based sponge sandpaper is stronger than paper-based sponge sandpaper and less sensitive to temperature and humidity. It does not lose stability due to increased temperature and humidity, and its durability is much higher than that of paper sponge sandpaper. Commonly used abrasives in furniture manufacturing include alumina, silicon carbide, zirconium aluminum oxide, and garnet; hand sandpaper uses glass abrasive.

Characteristics of sponge sandpaper for metal polishing:

Coarse grit is used for coarse grinding, high plasticity, large grinding area, to avoid chip embedding, and softer workpieces; fine grit is used for fine grinding and harder workpieces. Metal polishing materials are bonded to a substrate with an adhesive. The adhesive should possess characteristics such as strength, elasticity, heat resistance, and water resistance.

Waterproof Sandpaper Introduction:

Waterproof sandpaper is mainly used for sanding and polishing automobiles, furniture, leather, appliance casings, and mechanical parts. Waterproof sandpaper has smaller gaps between the abrasive grains, producing smaller abrasive particles. When used with water, these particles are washed away. Therefore, it must be used with water. If waterproof sandpaper is used dry, the particles will remain in the gaps between the abrasive grains, making the sandpaper surface shiny but failing to achieve its intended effect. Dry sandpaper, on the other hand, has larger gaps between the abrasive grains, producing larger abrasive particles that fall off during sanding, so it does not need to be used with water.

Features of waterproof sandpaper:

Grinding efficiency is increased by 30-50%, lifespan is long, less heat is generated during grinding, high strength, tear resistance, good anti-clogging effect, and it prevents the sandpaper from fading and affecting the surface quality of the workpiece.
