Difference between pink fused alumina and ruby

May 14, 2020

There are many precious stones in the world, one of which is beautiful ruby. The people put a piece of mysterious veil on the rubies because of rare.

The so called “Ruby” is red, deep purple, purplish red, orange-red corundum at gem level. The chemical composition of ruby is aluminum oxide, and also contains a small amount of chromium, iron, titanium. It is red or pink in color due to the presence of trace element chromium and the color distribution is often uneven, ribbon or color block. In addition, the crystal form of ruby is usually barrel, short column and plate and also has flat crystal growing grain in it.

The main component of the pink fused alumina is α-Al2O3, whose hardness is higher than that of brown fused alumina, and its toughness is higher than that of white fused alumina. The pink fused alumina is a material made by adding about 22% of the chromium elements based on the production process of white fused alumina and the color of it can appear from red to purple. Moreover, the pink fused alumina with good crystal structure can be used in the production of low-end jewelry, such as the rings, pendant, etc which is sold in certain websites from dozens to hundreds of yuan. The pink fused alumina also can be used in the industrial field because of high hardness, for example, it is often used in the production of abrasive tools which can grind high-speed steel, etc., as well as can be used as grinding material, polishing material, spraying material, precision casting sand, chemical catalyst carrier, advanced refractory material, etc.

The following is the difference between pink fused alumina and ruby:

1, When we take out the ruby and shine it in the sunshine, it will reflect a beautiful six-ray of starlight or six line for short, which is the result of the special structure that natural rubies have, but if not, it is pink fused alumina. Furthermore, the black line with a wavelength of 450mm in the natural ruby can be seen in the blue part of the spectrum in the spectroscope, which is summarized by the appraisers based on years of experience. So, if there is a black line in it, it is a natural ruby; if not, it is an artificial pink fused alumina.

2, To distinguish them by color.

The color of pink fused alumina is uniform and clean, as well as there are few defects in the crystal. But it is a natural ruby, there are natural defects in crystal, such as cotton, grain, crack, etc., and the color is not uniform, besides, the color is not uniform, and gems have polygonal or triangular bubbles inside.

3, To distinguish them by inclusion.

Common natural rubies have a lot of cracks in them, but few of the natural ones are perfect. Because it is formed in nature, there are more or less some fragments or small Spaces inside. Looking under a magnifying microscope, if you can see these, then they are real rubies; the other are pink fused alumina.
