Tabular alumina has a wide range of applications in the foundry industry, mainly in the following aspects:
I. Improving the Performance of Refractory Materials
Tabular alumina, due to its excellent physical properties, such as coarse crystals, well-developed α-Al₂O₃ crystal structure, high purity, and good volume stability, is often used as the main component in the manufacture of alumina-carbon, alumina-magnesia-carbon, magnesia-alumina-carbon, magnesia-spinel, and alumina-chromium refractory bricks.
II. Improving grinding tools Life
Tabular alumina possesses high hardness and wear resistance, making it commonly used in the manufacture of critical components of casting grinding tools, such as sprue bushings and runners. These components must withstand the erosion and corrosion of high-temperature molten metal during the casting process. The use of tabular alumina can significantly improve the wear resistance and lifespan of the grinding tool, thereby reducing production costs.
III. Optimizing the Casting Process
Tabular alumina possesses high thermal conductivity and a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which facilitates rapid heat dissipation and reduces thermal stress during the casting process. This helps reduce casting defects such as porosity, shrinkage cavities, and cracks, thereby improving casting quality and yield.
Simultaneously, it can also be used as aggregate in castables and precast components to manufacture various casting refractory materials. These materials provide excellent insulation and support during the casting process, ensuring its smooth operation.
IV. Manufacturing Casting Auxiliary Materials
Tabular alumina, due to its excellent thermal shock resistance and corrosion resistance, is often used to manufacture casting auxiliary materials such as sliding gates and permeable bricks. These auxiliary materials ensure the smooth flow and discharge of molten metal during the casting process, while preventing defects such as porosity and inclusions in the castings, thereby improving the quality of the castings.
V. Smelting Rare and Precious Metals and Special Alloys
Tabular alumina, due to its high purity and excellent high-temperature resistance, is often used in crucibles and vessels for smelting rare and precious metals and special alloys. This helps ensure the smooth progress of the smelting process and the stability of product quality.
