Why Is Resinoid Grinding Wheel Quality Sometimes Inconsistent?

Nov 02, 2026

Quality problems during resinoid grinding wheel production can result from several factors. Since manufacturing involves multiple materials and processes, inconsistent quality is often caused by raw material selection, production techniques, equipment conditions, and inspection procedures.

01. Raw Material Issues

A resinoid grinding wheel consists of abrasive grains, bonding agents, and auxiliary materials such as fillers, reinforcing materials, and colorants. The quality of each ingredient directly affects the final product.

1. Abrasive Grain Quality

Abrasive quality can vary considerably across the market. Two common issues deserve attention:

(1) Poor physical properties:

Even when chemical composition meets specifications, physical properties such as bulk density may still fall below international standards.

(2) Inconsistent grit distribution:

The actual particle size distribution may differ from standard requirements, particularly in the proportion of main-size particles within each grit grade.

2. Bonding Agent Quality

Phenolic resin is the most commonly used bonding agent in a resinoid grinding wheel. Its quality directly affects wheel strength and hardness.

(1) Unstable resin quality:

Excessive free phenol content can accelerate resin decomposition during curing, reducing the mechanical strength of the finished wheel.

(2) Incorrect resin-to-hexamine ratio:

Hexamine (hexamethylenetetramine) is used as a curing agent. Too little can result in incomplete curing, while too much may decompose and volatilize during heating, increasing porosity and weakening the wheel.

(3) Improper resin powder particle size:

Coarse resin powder is difficult to distribute evenly throughout the mixture. However, excessively fine powder can also make uniform mixing difficult, affecting the cutting and grinding performance of the finished product.

02. Issues in the Manufacturing Process of Resinoid Grinding Wheels

Production processes play a major role in the quality consistency of a resinoid grinding wheel. Problems can occur during mixing, molding, curing, and finishing.

(1) Mixing:

All ingredients must be evenly distributed. The mixture should remain loose and workable, without noticeable powder separation, to ensure consistent molding.

(2) Molding:

Improper operation or limitations in rotary spreading equipment can cause uneven material distribution, dimensional deviations, and static imbalance.

(3) Curing:

This is one of the most critical production stages. Excessive temperature differences inside the curing oven or improper furnace loading can cause deviations from the specified curing schedule, resulting in inconsistent bonding quality and wheel strength.

(4) Finishing:

Large-diameter, thick wheels and products with tight dimensional tolerances often require machining after curing to meet geometric and runout requirements.

(5) Incorrect process parameters:

Using the same formulation and production settings for different wheel specifications without proper adjustments can lead to inconsistent performance.

03. Equipment and Tooling Issues

(1) Production equipment:

Inadequate mixing machines, hydraulic presses with insufficient capacity, and poor equipment maintenance can all affect manufacturing consistency.

(2) Tooling management:

Improper storage and maintenance of molds and other production tools may cause damage, contamination, and variations in the quality of a resinoid grinding wheel. A well-organized tooling management system is essential for stable production.

04. Inspection and Testing Equipment Issues

(1) Incomplete quality control procedures:

Incoming material inspection, in-process inspection, and final product inspection are essential. However, some manufacturers lack standardized procedures, clear responsibilities, qualified inspection personnel, or effective supervision.

(2) Insufficient testing equipment:

A proper inspection system should include several essential instruments:

◆ Rotational strength testing machine:

Checks the wheel's mechanical strength and safety under high-speed rotation.

◆ Sandblast hardness tester or Rockwell hardness tester:

Used for hardness testing, except where these methods are unsuitable for certain resin-bonded cutting and grinding discs.

◆ Static balancing machine:

Checks wheel balance. Dynamic balancing equipment may also be required for diamond grinding wheels.

Other useful instruments include axial and radial runout measuring devices, bore gauges, vernier calipers, and grinding performance testing machines.

Regular equipment maintenance and calibration are equally important. Without reliable testing instruments, manufacturers may fail to identify defects before products leave the factory.
