Comparison Of The Performance And Applications Of Brown Fused Alumina And White Fused Alumina In Sandblasting

Jan 08, 2026

I. Comparison of Brown Fused Alumina and White Fused Alumina for Sandblasting Applications

Brown Fused Alumina: Specific gravity is 3.85 g/cm³, appearance is reddish-brown or brownish-black granules. It is an artificial corundum produced by high-temperature smelting of bauxite and coke in an electric arc furnace.
White Fused Alumina: Specific gravity is 3.9 g/cm³, white granular or fine powder form. It is produced by high-temperature smelting and crushing of alumina powder in an electric arc furnace.

II. Comparison of Characteristics of Brown Fused Alumina and White Fused Alumina in Sandblasting

Brown fused alumina sandblasting abrasive is characterized by short grinding time, high efficiency, good cost-effectiveness, and low price. Brown fused alumina has moderate hardness, high toughness, good self-sharpening properties, low sand consumption during sandblasting, and can be recycled and reused, resulting in a good surface finish of the workpiece; moreover, it has stable chemical composition and is wear-resistant and resistant to acids and alkalis.

White fused alumina has characteristics such as high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, high hardness, high strength, and wear resistance. The hardness of white fused alumina is higher than that of brown fused alumina, but its toughness is lower.

III. Comparison of the Uses of Brown Fused Alumina and White Fused Alumina in Sandblasting

Brown Fused Alumina:
1. Rust removal, decontamination, and descaling of iron workpieces, increasing the adhesion of plating and coatings.
2. Descaling, surface strengthening, and polishing of aluminum workpieces.
3. Descaling and matte finishing of copper workpieces.
4. Crystal frosting and pattern engraving of glass products.
5. Matte finishing of plastic products.
6. Flocking and effect pattern processing of special fabrics such as denim.

White Fused Alumina:
White fused alumina is mainly used for surface finishing, aesthetic finishing, etching, pre-treatment, deburring, stress relief, electronic component processing, mold processing, large workpiece processing, and glass processing.
