White fused alumina is a widely used abrasive material in grinding and polishing applications. It offers high hardness, stable cutting performance, and excellent self-sharpening ability, making it suitable for both rough machining and precision finishing. In international markets, it is also commonly referred to as white aluminum oxide, especially in industrial procurement and technical documentation.

 

The performance of white fused aluminais mainly determined by grit size, which directly affects cutting efficiency and surface finish. It is generally classified into F series (F4–F240) and micro powder W series (W63–W0.5). The smaller the number, the coarser the grain; the larger the number, the finer the abrasive.

 

1. Grit Size Classification Overview

 

Coarse grades of white aluminum oxide (F4–F14) are designed for heavy stock removal and rough grinding. They are commonly used for steel billets, castings, stone leveling, and other high-efficiency machining tasks. This range focuses on fast material removal rather than surface quality.

 

Medium grit white aluminum oxide (F14–F30) is widely used in general industrial grinding. It is suitable for deburring, weld cleaning, cutting edge finishing, and rough surface preparation of metal and stone materials.

 

Medium-fine grades (F30–F60) are typically used in semi-finishing processes such as surface grinding, cylindrical grinding, and tool pre-finishing. In this stage, white aluminum oxide helps improve surface consistency while maintaining stable cutting performance.

 

Fine grit white aluminum oxide (F60–F100) is used for precision grinding applications including tool sharpening, gear finishing, and mold processing. It provides smoother surface quality and better dimensional accuracy.

 

Micro powder white aluminum oxide (W63–W0.5) is designed for ultra-fine polishing and mirror finishing. It is widely used in optical components, precision molds, and high-end metal surface treatment where extremely low surface roughness is required.

 

 

2. Application Range by Grit Size

 

In practical applications, white fused alumina above F4 is mainly used for heavy-duty rough grinding where large material removal is required. The F14–F30 range is the most commonly used in general manufacturing for deburring, welding cleanup, and rough shaping. The F30–F60 range is suitable for semi-finishing processes that require better surface control and reduced roughness. The F60–F100 range is widely applied in precision machining where high surface quality and accuracy are essential. Micro powder grades (W series) are used for final polishing and mirror finishing in high-end industries.

 

Across all these stages, white fused alumina provides stable performance, making it suitable for a wide range of grinding applications from rough processing to ultra-precision finishing.

 

3. Importance of Grit Selection

 

Selecting the correct white fused alumina grit size is essential for achieving the desired balance between efficiency and surface quality. Coarser grits improve material removal speed, while finer grits enhance surface finish and accuracy. Proper selection also helps reduce heat generation, improve tool life, and prevent workpiece damage during grinding operations.
