In the competitive grinding industry, improving tool life and reducing production costs have become important goals. Optimizing abrasive performance is an effective way to improve grinding efficiency and maintain stable processing quality.
Metal-Coated Diamond Improves Grinding Performance
Many diamond resinoid grinding wheels now use Ti-coated or Ni-coated diamond as the abrasive material. Compared with ordinary diamond grains, metal-coated diamonds offer stronger bonding, better heat resistance, and longer service life.
During grinding, many diamond grains in conventional wheels fall out prematurely due to weak bonding, heat, and impact forces. After metal coating, the diamond surface becomes rougher, allowing the resin bond to hold the grains more firmly. The coated diamond also has higher compressive strength, reducing grain breakage during heavy-duty grinding.
Balancing Sharpness and Durability
Although metal-coated diamond improves durability, it may reduce self-sharpening ability because the metal layer slows down grain fracture. Since cutting efficiency is also important, using only coated diamond is not always the most practical solution.
A better approach is to combine coated and ordinary diamond abrasives. Adding around 20% or more Ti-coated or Ni-coated diamond can help a resinoid grinding wheel achieve longer service life while maintaining good sharpness. The coated grains can also support nearby diamond particles and reduce premature grain loss.
Silicon Carbide Whiskers Enhance Wheel Strength
Besides metal-coated diamond, silicon carbide whiskers can further improve the performance of a resinoid grinding wheel. With high hardness, excellent strength, and wear resistance, they enhance the bonding between abrasive grains and the resin matrix.
The needle-like structure of silicon carbide whiskers provides a larger bonding area, improving the strength, heat resistance, and durability of the wheel. This reinforcement helps the resinoid grinding wheel maintain stable performance during demanding grinding operations.
Improving Efficiency While Reducing Costs
By combining metal-coated diamond and reinforcing materials, manufacturers can achieve a better balance between cutting ability, durability, and production cost. Proper formulation and uniform mixing are essential for maximizing the performance of a resinoid grinding wheel.
With optimized abrasive selection, a resinoid grinding wheel can reduce replacement frequency, improve grinding consistency, and provide a more cost-effective solution for precision machining applications.
